When the first snatches of this song came to me, I’d been musing on the idea of something mellow to sing by the campfire in the evening. The day dies in a glorious sunset, stars gradually appear, children fall asleep in their chairs as parents share yarns, and someone picks up a guitar and starts strumming it softly. This song is for that moment.
.
Come together round the campfire
In the softness of the ev’ning,
Like the ancient people here before
Singing their stories of meaning.
Flames dance in red before our eyes,
Turning light into seeing,
Like the words of the ancestors
Singing the land into being.
Coals burning with the heat of life,
Energising and renewing,
Like the warmth that the elders bring
Singing the day into doing.
Embers glowing as they linger on,
Like the stars above us gleaming;
Keep the circle as the fire dies,
Singing the night into dreaming.
Ooo – ooo – oo-oo – ooo – ooh
Singing the night into dreaming.
